2021.10.25 01:18 allfantasies101 Question about discharge
I have this guy in my class that likes to talk about how he was in the marines. My first thought was awesome, I can connect with him! (Navy Vet here). But the more we got to talking I could tell he didn't really want to talk to ME about his military experience. Come to find out he was medically discharged before meeting his first unit. I don't know exactly what that means. Did he get discharged like right afteduring bootcamp? I don't know anything about the marines.
Also, to add, I'm not discharge shaming, it's just this guy brags to the girl next to him but if I try to talk to him at all about his experience, he just kinda clams up. I'm not trying to put the dude down I was just trying to make a veteran pal.

2021.10.25 01:18 ClearlyAGoodIdea Ticwatch Pro 3 Ultra Review
DISCLAIMER: I have been provided with an advance review unit in exchange for my honest feedback and review. I have not been asked for preapproval of content, and all that follows are my honest, unfiltered opinions. Mobvoi Inc. has had no editorial approval over this review, and was not provided with an advance copy.
I have been using the Ticwatch Pro 3 Ultra for roughly a week, and I have a few thoughts to share.
TL:DR: The watch is quite light and comfortable, even if that comes at the expense of a “luxury” feel; the band can get uncomfortable after wearing for days at a time; the display and UX is great, as is the battery life, which is close to 2 ½ days with all tracking turned on; the vibration motor is, quite frankly, the worst part of the device; overall, a good choice, though still limited by WearOS 2.
Background: I have owned various smartwatches since roughly 2018, including the Fossil Q Wander, Pebble, Misfit Vapor 2, and the Galaxy Watch (42mm). I’m more of a casual user, and I only jumped from one watch to the next because of a specific feature made available which was superior to the prior. I mostly bought my watches on sale, and therefore never really thought of a smartwatch needing to be a premium product, and as such was willing to overlook certain flaws. This is my first watch from the higher end of modern WearOS devices, which gave me a chance to do a proper comparison and see what I was missing out on.
I will be splitting this review into 3 parts: 1) Watch Build 2) Hardware 3) Software and Sensors (User Experience), as well as a brief conclusion.
When I first started using the watch, my primary concern was about the size. I have smaller wrists, and all of my previous watches have been 42mm or smaller. However, at roughly 48mm, this watch seems to be the largest I would be comfortable with. Even though it feels a bit large, the screen is enough to justify it. I believe the main reason why this doesn’t feel too large has to do with its material make up. While I have found that there are other watches that have a more premium feel, being made up entirely out of stainless steel and other metals (see the Galaxy Watch, for example), the Ticwatch has some nice metal trimmings, while still keeping a primarily plastic-based body, which keeps the weight manageable. Overall, the watch has a solid, durable feel, and lends confidence to its claims of high durability (which I fortunately have not found a need to test).
The stock bands which came with the watch honestly feel great. Other watches come with rubber bands that feel like dollar-store quality. These, however, are thick, wide, sturdy bands, and I found them to be fine for day to day use. However, they aren’t perfect. Because of the size of my wrist, throughout the day, the band starts to dig into my skin, and when the time arrives to go to sleep, I usually switch the watch over to my other wrist, so as not to become too uncomfortable.
The screen on the Ticwatch has been the highlight. It's quite large (I believe 1.4 inches), and looks great both indoors and in sunlight, where it can get plenty bright. While not as vibrant as the Galaxy watch, I find the colors to be entirely acceptable. Things get even better with the LCD always on display. Besides helping the watch get great battery life, the LCD displays both basic information, such as the time, date, and battery life, as well as a workout mode, which shows pace, heart rate, and other relevant info. The LCD also comes with a backlight, which can be customized with a color of your choice. It's quite a unique feature, and I personally love it, though others may find it polarizing.
The actual body of the watch has 2 buttons to assist with navigation. While they spin, they unfortunately are not active crowns. This is, quite frankly, not ideal, as WearOS seems designed primarily for use with crowns, and without them, I find the screen getting quite smudged. This is one of the few things that I miss after coming from the Misfit Vapor and the Galaxy Watch, and some may find this to be a deal breaker.
One other issue with the build, as many others have noted, is the vibration motor. To put it in two words: It sucks. When it goes off, I tend to hear it more than I feel it, and it in no way matches the premium experience that the rest of the watch provides. Hopefully, Mobvoi will eventually get around to adding proper vibration motors, as it drags down what would otherwise be a pretty great experience.
The Ticwatch Pro 3 Ultra comes with the Snapdragon 4100 and 1 GB of RAM. In my experience, this translates into a mostly flawless experience in daily use, with no hitches or delays when switching to and from apps. It also enables Google Assistant to run properly, which hasn’t been a given on many other WearOS devices. Overall, the watch feels snappy, and is a joy to use.
The watch’s battery life is amazing. While I’m not sure whether the custom co-processor accomplishes this, I can say that the Ticwatch Pro 3 Ultra has the longest battery in a smartwatch that I’ve owned. With the LCD, fitness tracking, bluetooth, and health sensors all turned on, I’ve had it consistently last me 2 ½ days, and I imagine that I could stretch that to 3 with a little tweaking. This is great, not least because the charger that comes with the watch is painfully slow. The less I need to charge this watch, the better.
Software and Sensors
The watch comes preloaded with all of the standard WearOS apps, as well as Mobvoi’s own suite of proprietary fitness applets. While that does lead to some duplication between Google Fit and Mobvoi’s own solutions, Mobvoi happens to have the vastly superior app when it comes to fitness tracking.
The Ticwatch comes with the full gamut of health sensing, including heart rate, SpO2, pedometer tracking, and noise sensors. These work in concert with the GPS and a baromete altimeter to provide a great and accurate tracking experience overall. One thing to note, however, is that the GPS, in my experience, had issues at times with locking onto a satellite. If not for the phone that I carry with me, I fear that the maps provided by Google Fit would be extremely inaccurate. Your personal experience may vary, however.
While Google Fit provides basic, overarching data, Mobvoi has both basic metrics (Heart Rate, Step Tracking, and Sleep Tracking for instance) as well as advanced features, like SpO2. It also includes some more experimental features, like one that claims to measure “Alertness”. While I don’t have a way to understand how it determines alertness, it does seem to measure all other metrics in line with all of my previous devices. As well, sleep tracking seems to align with my actual experience. Mobvoi also has automatic workout detection, and it seems to work as well, if not a bit better, than the other watches provide. (While there may be reason to be concerned with your data privacy, Mobvoi lets you store metrics locally, obviating that problem.)
One let down with this watch is the lack of WearOS 3. While Mobvoi does say that it will arrive in the future, I can’t rate a device based on future expectations. WearOS 2 is fine, but it will slowly become worse as more developers decide to move to developing for WearOS 3 exclusively, as some have already started to do. If Mobvoi releases WearOS 3, you can expect an update.
With the Ticwatch Pro 3 Ultra, Mobvoi has created a mostly wonderful WearOS watch. With its great hardware, tracking capabilities and battery life, it earns its cost price, in my opinion, even with the weak vibration motor, cheaper material build, and slow charging.
Thanks for reading, and let me know if you have any questions regarding the watch. I’ll gladly answer them to the best of my ability!

2021.10.25 01:18 moose123456792 Does she like me, or am I overthinking
So earlier today I was texting my friend who I kinda have a crush on (I'm sure the she's figured this out on her own). I saw that the conversation was coming to a close, so I asked how her day was going (this is nothing out of the ordinary for our conversations). She then really good, and then immediately after said "and (insert my name), I really appreciate our friendship". I then replied saying that I appreciate our friendship too.
Is this her kinda saying she likes me, or is she saying that she just wants to be friends, or am I totally overthinking everything?

2021.10.25 01:18 NSWthrowaway86 What happened to Vernor Vinge?
I think it's been around 10 years since his last book.
I know he's never been the most prolific authors, but I was hoping for at least another book?
With the recent discovery of a 'real' OnOff star, I've been thinking about his work again. Wasn't a huge fan of Rainbows End *but I re-read it recently and re-evaluated it a lot more positively. *Children of the Sky seemed to promise a lot in terms of a sequel but we never got one...
