2021.12.03 23:10 RiverLodes Silent Arbiters and abilities that put attackers into combat
I'm wanting to build a [[Alesha, Who Smiles At Death]] commander deck using her activated ability to put infect creatures on the battlefield, if a [[Silent Arbiter]] or something else that would limit attackers/blockers is on the battlefield does it cause that ability to fizzle or would the ability be a loophole

2021.12.03 23:10 OmgThatDream What's your take on faith?
How to argue that faith is not a smart option? I don't know what to answer to an old man saying "if i don't believe i have 50% chances of being the right one and 50% going to hell, meanwhile believing is 50% disapointed but don't care because there's no after life and 50% heaven, so i prefer to believe as a safe option".
I feel like said like that it sounds good but we all know that keeping the curiosity of discovery and research to find the truth is more exciting. On the other hand if someone believes just as a safe option and follows the rules just in case, is it respectfull to consider being atheist a better option?

2021.12.03 23:10 notsocharmingprince Games Workshop has a problem with how it portrays the Imperium
Good Evening, I hope this note finds everyone well and is reasonably productive.
I’ll get right down to it. Games Workshop has a problem with how it portrays the Imperium. That problem is three fold and directly relates to modern society, culture, and media in the real world. These problems are economic, cultural, and literary. I’ll work through all these issues below, providing examples from The literature, real world events and literature, and social archetypes. The objective of this discussion is to explore that the idea that the Imperium is presented as parody or not to be revered/respected is false. My argument will attempt to prove that if Games Workshop seeks to present the Imperium as parody they need to seriously alter their writing style, objective, and subject.
In M40Y997 after nearly 3 months of planning 156,000 Imperial Guard from nearly a dozen planets assaulted a beach head in a desperate attempt to open a second front against the Chaos controlled Fortress Continent to prevent the genocidal leader of Chaos forces from anchoring his position. Despite a brutal artillery bombardment lasting nearly an hour Imperial Forces suffered 10000 casualties on the first day of fighting. Through blood, sacrifice, bravery, and suffering Imperial forces were able to open a second front eventually leading to the end of Chaos occupation of the planet.
Sounds very 40K doesn’t it? That is actually a 40K-ised description of the Normandy D-Day landings of World War II one of our most revered and remembered military events in modern history. We, as a culture lionize the type of behavior written about in the military science fiction world of Warhammer 40K. The themes of belief, sacrifice, honor, dignity, and brotherhood touch us all in various ways. Even suicidal last stands like those at Stalingrad and Rorke's Drift are honored to our very cores. The idea of austere warrior monks stir in us the ideas of religious mysticism we see in both European and Asian Culture. The main themes of the majority of Warhammer 40K books focus on these subjects, the ones we honor and respect culturally. Even the books that show the seedy underbelly of Imperial Corruption like the War of the Beast series still presents the honorable true believing underdog fighting his or her way through the corruption and setting it right. These themes are echoed and celebrated throughout cultures across all of society. It’s been said that “Americans view themselves as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.” I would argue that this is echoed in the 40K books with subjects like faith, truth, and honor, as wrongs to be righted. The books don’t wallow in the corruption or the underlying issues of the imperial problems. Presenting these cultural issues as they do leads one to believe that it’s not presented as parody, but as aspiration that has not been lived up to, but can be.
Showing the Imperium as a shitty place, describing it as a shitty place, and exploring dystopia doesn’t sell. Games Workshop as a company had a revenue of 256.57 British Pounds. George Orwell’s estate has an estimated net worth between 11 million and 85 million dollars. Orwell, possibly the greatest dystopian writer of all time, can’t hold a candle to Games Workshop. There is one simple fact about this, dystopia doesn’t sell. Over the years Games Workshop has been making a structural effort to clean up its presentation of its entire line of products into something much more mass marketable. We can see this over the course of years even as far back as third edition and the introduction of Tau all the way to the ornate cleaner lines of the newer marine and Custodies models. Showing how fucked up and terrible the Imperium is simply doesn’t sell. No one wants to read a book about the corpse starch operator or the librarian who sits around all day every day making sure no one touches a certain stack of books, and his parents and grandparents did exactly the same thing. Terrible shit doesn’t sell. That’s not to say that sacrifice doesn’t sell. Blowing up a planet to prevent the biomass from going to the Tyranids isnt terrible, it’s sacrifice. Sacrifice sells. Even then it’s not presented as terrible. It’s abstracted away. They don’t cover little Billy screaming as he clutches his little sister disintegrating from the Life Eater Virus before the firestorm washes the planet clean. The terrible things aren’t covered in the books because it doesn’t sell. This economic problem will continue to plague 40K as it continues to attempt to go mainstream and clean up its image.
This issue is somewhat combined into Cultural and Economic because Games Workshop continues to write itself into a corner with its presentation. At its core 40K Lore is military Science Fiction with multiple factions fighting in a well built world. As long as the 40K universe continues to focus on the Military Science Fiction genre the ability to explore more dystopian sides of 40K will be stymied by the very nature of the literature at hand. If Games Workshop wants to abstract away from the people revering the “fascist” and “totalitarian” imperium they are going to have to change the way they write and the way they are monetizing their intellectual property through lore. At this point in the Lore the Imperium isn’t terrible, even while presenting things as desperate, terrifying, and horrible, underlying themes of sacrifice, perseverance, and duty overwrite those terrible things in the mind of the reader. If Games Workshop wants to change this they are going to have to take some risks, and right now I’m not sure they want to take those risks.
Thank you, I hope you enjoyed this. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

2021.12.03 23:10 No_Significance3868 Thoughts on getting a visible tattoo in law school?
Hi y'all. As you can probably tell from the title, there's this tattoo I've wanted to SO long. Its a wrist/forearm tattoo that would also very slightly carry on to my hand and can't be hidden as easily. I have other tattoos that are always hidden under my clothes/in tough spots, but I've put off getting this one because it wouldn't be able to hide it as easily with a blazer, etc. It is really that important to have no ink showing in the future to potential employers? If I have a little bit of ink on my hand/wrist/forearm could that have a serious impact on who hires me? Any experiences from lawyers with ink much appreciated <3

2021.12.03 23:10 MetagrossMaxis Something I find funny about the Unova's dislike
This came up in a conversation I was having in a discord call, and it was the subject of "challenge mode" and deliberately more difficult fights in pokemon, things like items and such on trainers better compositions, etc, and that I've seen it in a lot of different circles, comments on youtube/streams, her itself and such.
But, theres a good reason they've never redone those concepts. Its because the one game to had a difficulty mode, and the two games to make harder teams for the AI were received, and more importantly, Sold, so poorly.
Unova's pretty much unanimously agreed to be the hardest games, but its funny seeing how the things it did are what people want, but the same initially had such a terrible reception. That's probably the reason its never come back, at least the items and better team compositions part, until BDSP. It took almost a decade of online vocals to even start to make a dent in those terrible sale numbers. Black2/White2's combined sale numbers are lower than every other games sale numbers outside of stand alone games like emerald and Platinum (which accounting for B2W2 sale numbers being two games, they still heavily undersold those games on their own) baring the virtual console release of the original games. It pretty much has everything to do with profits. the game that was harder sold poorly, the game that was easier (XY after it) sold massively better, they'll always go with the numbers.
And a good amount of that in sale numbers does deal in the DS being a dying,. near dead platform at the time of even Black and white's release, but also gen 5 being pretty heavily hated when it came around, that had a big impact on sales of the sequels. I do wonder, if B2W2 sold better, would the games have been more challenging from there on out if they just sold better, if they saw it seemed to be more profitable to make those harder games.
